The X in UX10 refers to the back. All Yamaha X verticals have a a radial back post design to brace the soundboard. The bracing forms an X. Generally the X models have beefier cabinets than the standard U series. In height, width, and depth, the U1 and UX1 are virtually identical.
If this is a new-to-new comparison, the UX10 silent will be a lot more expensive than the U1. The current new price of a U1 is in the region of £11k ! before any silent system is fitted !
If this is a used-to-used comparison, it’s more about age and condition than the X factor.
The Yamaha UX10 was made between 1988, when it was labelled as the UX10BL, and 1994, when it was called the UX10A, there were some very minor design changes in this time, but they are virtually the same piano.
The UX was built with using higher grade hammers, action, stringing etc.. similar to what it uses on its concert grands. A very rare find indeed, especially with the silent function. This function is simply switched on , the middle pedal moved over and this automatically engages the silent system to lets you enjoy the piano through headphones.
